Celebrants are members of the community who have been appointed by the Attorney-General to perform marriage ceremonies that are both legal and which also satisfy individual desires for traditions and rituals meaningful to the people concerned.

Thus marriage celebrants have not only the privilege of performing a marriage ceremony, they can assist the couple to design the wedding ceremony which is unique to their own situation and needs.

While helping couples to compile a wedding ceremony uniquely their own, the celebrant allows the couple to hold the ceremony in whatever wedding venue they choose, and at time significant or convenient for them. S/he will give couples the opportunity to involve friends and relatives in the wedding ceremony should they so desire.

Not only is a marriage celebrant expected to help couples express their personal vision on their wedding day, they are also expected to recognise the importance of the institution of marriage as a lasting bond, and give the couple the opportunity to know about the educational resources available to them in helping their relationship to grow.

Current fees charged by individual celebrant for performing a civil marriage range from around $400 to $750, depending on individual situations.
