With the change to legislation with regard to Civil Marriage Celebrants, all registered Australian Civil Marriage Celebrant are required to complete a minimum of 5 hours Ongoing Professional Development training each year. Courses are run by providers approved by the Australian Attorney-General's Department and include a one hour Compulsory Topic set by the Australian Attorney-General Department, and 4 hours of other training.

Celebrants are not allowed to take the same topic within a 5 year bracket, apart from the Relationship Education Course which can be repeated if the provider offers a different speaker from a relationship education provider.

The Compulsory topic can only be offered by training organisations in a face to face situation. If a celebrant finds it impossible to attend, the unit can be completed by distance education direct with the Attorney-General's Department.

All other courses are provided in face to face situations, online and distance education courses. Since Civil Marriage Celebrants are required to undertake different courses every year, courses are continuously being changed and updated.

To complete his/her requirements, a celebrant must complete five hours training each year, beginning 1st September to 30th August.

Each course is assigned a Code Number by the Australian Attorney-General's Department and is quoted by the provider of the course.

A Civil Marriage Celebrant who completes a course, is given a Certificate of Completion. When celebrants send in their annual returns of the number of ceremonies they've performed during the year, they will quote the number of the course which they undertook, and the number of hours they completed.
