To perform funeral ceremonies does not require formal or official qualifications. However, it does require knowing the process.  Part of the process will include understanding the part other people play in the funeral ceremony. This might include a general knowledge of the workings of the Funeral Industry and its conventions and practices, as well as understanding the part played by funeral directors.

Personal qualities that a funeral celebrant might require will be public speaking ability, interviewing techniques,  a calm reassuring manner.

Compassion and empathy for the grieving families is one of the more important aspects of the role of the funeral celebrant, with the funeral celebrant recognising the grief-process and its relevance to the funeral celebrancy. It will allow the funeral celebrant to construct a ceremony reflecting the wishes of the family.

In designing the ceremony, the funeral celebrant will show creativity and sensitivity in the way the ceremony reflects the life of the deceased by the selection of appropriate readings and music and the incorporation of any multi-cultural symbolisms.

On a business level, the funeral celebrant will develop good working relationships with funeral directors as well as crematorium managers.
