Celebrants Association of New Zealand Code of Conduct

1.    Personalised service:

Celebrants will provide a style of service that recognises the unique personalities of those with whom they work, being sensitive to their needs, wishes, values, philosophical and spiritual beliefs and cultural backgrounds.

2.    Responsibility:

Celebrants will be aware of and respect the relevant laws and practices, and will punctually fulfil their obligations to their clients, government agencies, and the association.

They will maintain standards of dress and behaviour befitting the occasion.

Only an inescapable, unforeseen circumstance or repugnant instructions justify failure to fulfil responsibilities accepted. In such rare cases the celebrant will do everything possible to ensure that the best possible alternative arrangements are made.

3.    Professionalism:

Celebrants will maintain the highest possible standard of professional and personal conduct in their work. They will respect confidences placed in them and will not use their position to take advantage of the people they work with in any way, or to impose their own beliefs or prejudices, or their religious or philosophical views.

Celebrants will not engage in inappropriate relationships with those with whom they work.

Celebrants will provide full and accurate information regarding their role and fees charged.

4.    Celebrancy:

Celebrants conducting ceremonies accept that their primary responsibility is to their clients, and work on the principle that their clients have the right to make their own decisions.

The celebrant will be aware of human behavioural processes. They will be clear on the boundaries of the celebrant’s role and will be careful not to impose unwanted contact after the service.

The celebrant has a responsibility to be informed about specialist organisations and agencies that may be of help, should the client wish to be referred.
